"There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman - some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me - only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there."

"American Psycho" Video

Featuring a solid performance by Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, American Psycho is an outstanding satire that focuses on the mindless consumerism and moral bankruptcy of the '80s. The main character is a young yuppie stockbroker who doubles as a serial killer. I never read Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel but I assume that his bestseller was completely misunderstood by the American public, most of whom have never been able to understand the old Swiftian sense of humor, anyway. Some of my favorite scenes involve Bateman dissecting the banal music hits of the '80s; he even butchers a fellow broker in his luxurious apartment to the strains of "Hip to be Square" by none other than Huey Lewis and the News.

Just thought i'd say that the film is utterly horrendous compared to the novel and this therefore means that whenever i recommend the book to someone i'm always told 'oh yeh i saw the film, did he actually do it then?'. Utter wank.
