MPAA Rating: R
Director: Mike Barker
Starring: Alessandro Nivola, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Father Terrance Sweeney
Another cheap film influenced by Pulp Fiction, Best Laid Plans concerns the exploits of Nick (Alessandro Nivola) and his obnoxious old buddy Bryce (Josh Brolin). The latter picks up a young tart (Reese Witherspoon) in a seedy bar and ends up handcuffing her to a pool table after discovering that she's a minor who wants to report him for rape. I won't give away too much of the convoluted plot but "things are just not what they seem!"
A dumb but entertaining thriller that has more plot twists than Wild Things. I enjoyed the "gangsta" character who quotes from Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations of all things. That's originality! What you inevitably get is a lot of funky camera movements and editing techniques from a director who must be straight out of film school. Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.
