"In a big country, dreams stay with you, like a lover's voice fires the mountainside... Stay alive..." Energetic, guitar-heavy group (come on, it did sound like bagpipes!) celebrates life in the Scottish highlands.

Big Country grew out of a former Scottish punk band called The Skids into what I refer to as "the poor man's U2." Along with U2, Big Country exploded onto the scene in 1983 as part the last phase of what is now referred to as the second British Invasion. "In a Big Country" appears on the album The Crossing, which sold more than 3 million copies. When you hit it big with a song that is the same name as your band, you know you have a one-hit wonder on your hands. However, Big Country was actually quite big in Europe for a number of years, or so they tell me. "I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert, but I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime..." After a long struggle with alcoholism, Big Country lead singer Stuart Adamson hanged himself in his hotel room in Hawaii shortly before Christmas, 2001. He was just 43 years old.

"Oh you dreamer, is this the way that you believed your life was going to turn out? Oh you dreamer, is this the better world that you were making all those plans for?" --Stuart Adamson, "You Dreamer"
