Devo - Whip It [1980]

"Devo - Whip It" Video
Amateur Video
The video takes place on a dude ranch, there's a guy with a bullwhip, strange things happen. The guy starts to slash off a woman's clothing with the whip. A crowd of weird spectators enjoys the act.
Everybody thought that this was such a cool video when it came out on MTV. I thought it was totally fuckin' stupid back then and I still can't sit through the entire video today. It's one of the dumbest, disturbing and unerotic videos ever made. However, MTV played it over and over and over. Bottom line: I despise Devo's entire body of work with the intensity of a thousand suns.
Formed on the campus of notorious Kent State University in 1972, Devo gained a cult following during the mid-1970s with their wacky costumes, futuristic helmets and idiotic lyrics (just listen to "Blockhead"). Things were never the same for the group after the massive success of "Whip It," In fact, Devo eventually sold out big time, lending "Whip It" to a slew of advertisements for companies such as Gateway, Twix and Pringles. I'm surprised the folks at Cool Whip didn't bite. The video was even inducted into the Music Video Production Association's Hall of Fame. Devo appeared on the TV show "Square Pegs." Band member Mark Mothersbaugh produced the kiddie TV show "Rugrats." So much for "de-evolution."

Stupid analysis. And how does "unerotic" come to be a valid point of critique?? Change the name of the page to Sexiest Videos if this is the standard.

Aw, come on...."Whip It' wasn't that bad! The song itself has a nice = sense of energy to it, and the video shows what to me seems like oddball = Monty Python type humor.

'Whip It'...not Devo's best song, but certainly one of the most inspired videos of the time(watch the part where the Asian girl is practicing target shooting.....not very PC but funny all the same).

As Henry Rollins said..."There are two types of people in this world...those that get Devo and those that don't." Clue...Irony and satire.

You don't like the "Freedom of Choice" lp? You painful streak of piss. I hope the ghosts of Kent State students shot down by the National Guard haunt you into premature senility.

How DEVO can you get? The point of this video went right over your poor spudly head. De-evolution is real!

Of course you know these guys were also involved in commercial jingles, right? (Neil Young pulled 'Rust Never Sleeps' from one of their ads) So using their songs in tv ads is a natural step for them.

What?? DEVO was one of the best bands of the 80's! I own every album they ever made. I still know all the words to most of their songs. I'm a headbanger today, but I still love DEVO! De-evolution! We're pinheads all! Jocko-Homo! :)

Honestly, I'm shocked more don't enjoy this video. It's supposed to be ridiculous. Don't take the video so seriously, just laugh at it.
