"The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes has accumulated numerous accolades throughout his storied career, including three NWA World Championships one NWA Georgia Heavyweight Championship, 10 NWA Florida Heavyweight Championships, seven NWA Southern Heavyweight Championships and one NWA National Heavyweight Championship, among others.
Born Virgil Riley Runnels, Jr. in Austin, Texas, Rhodes embarked on his professional wrestling career in the American Wrestling Association as a heel in the late 1960s, forming the tag team, The Texas Outlaws, with Dick Murdoch. During the mid-1970s, Rhodes' persona took the form of "Stardust," the "White Soul King" and eventually "The American Dream." Rhodes became known for his legendary feuds with the likes of Pak Song, "Superstar" Billy Graham, Kevin Sullivan, Blackjack Mulligan, Nikita Koloff, Abdullah the Butcher, "Crippler" Ray Stevens, Harley Race, Terry Funk and The Four Horseman (Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson and Ole Anderson). Rhodes captured the NWA World Championship three times by defeating Race in 1979 and 1981, and Flair in 1986.
Rhodes published his autobiography, Dusty: Reflections of an American Dream, in 2005. In 2007, Rhodes was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Rhodes is also a member of the WCW and Wrestling Observer Newsletter Halls of Fame. He has two sons, Dustin and Cody, both of whom are professional wrestlers.
