Top 10 American Independent Films

SLACKER [1991] Image

"'To those humans in whom I have faith; I wish suffering, being forsaken, sickness, maltreatment, humiliation. I wish that they should not remain unfamiliar with profound self-contempt, the torture of self-mistrust, and the misery of the vanquished. I have no pity for them because I wish them the only thing that can prove today whether one is worth anything or not—that one endures' . . . Remember, the passion for destruction is also a creative passion."

CLERKS [1994] Image

—"Which did you like better? Jedi or The Empire Strikes Back?"

—"Empire."

—"Blasphemy."

—"Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets."

DRUGSTORE COWBOY [1989] Image

"Well, to begin with, nobody, and I mean nobody, can talk a junkie out of using. You can talk to 'em for years but sooner or later they're gonna get ahold of something. Maybe it's not dope. Maybe it's booze, maybe it's glue, maybe it's gasoline. Maybe it's a gunshot to the head. But something. Something to relieve the pressures of their everyday life, like having to tie their shoes."

BLOOD SIMPLE [1984] Image

"The world is full of complainers. And the fact is, nothing comes with a guarantee. Now I don't care if you're the Pope of Rome, President of the United States or Man of the Year, something can all go wrong. Now go on ahead, you know complain, tell your problems to your neighbor, ask for help, and watch him fly. Now, in Russia, they got it mapped out so that everyone pulls for everyone else . . . that's the theory, anyway. But what I know about is Texas, and down here you're on your own."

MEMENTO [2000] Image

"I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still there. Do I believe the world's still there? Is it still out there? . . . Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different."

STRANGER THAN PARADISE [1984] Image

—"Why is it called TV dinner?"

—"Umm . . . You're supposed to eat it while you watch TV. Television."

—"I know what a TV is. Where does that meat come from?"

—"What do you mean?"

—"What does that meat come from?"

—"I guess it comes from a cow."

—"From a cow? It doesn't even look like meat."

—"Eva, stop bugging me, will you? You know, this is the way we eat in America. I got my meat, I got my potatoes, I got my vegetables. I got my dessert, and I don't even have to wash the dishes."

SWINGERS [1996] Image

—"I'm gonna find me two waitresses here and I'm gonna pull me a Fredo."

—"Yeah, well they're all skanks."

"What are you talking about? Look at all the beautiful babies here."

—"The beautiful babies don't work the midnight-to-six shift on a Wednesday. This is the skank shift."

—"Look at all the beautiful honeys here."

PULP FICTION [1994] Image

—"We should be fuckin' dead now, my friend! We just witnessed a miracle, and I want you to fucking acknowledge it!"

—"Okay, man, it was a miracle, can we leave now?"

A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE [1974] Image

"My characters are not violent or vile. They're everyday people. They have some money, but find themselves discontented with their own loneliness, their own mortality, the sameness of life." —John Cassavetes

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD [1968] Image

—"They're coming to get you, Barbra!"

—"Stop it! You're ignorant!"

—"They're coming for you, Barbra!"

—"Stop it! You're acting like a child!"

—"They're coming for you!"

—"Look, there comes one of them now!"

—"He'll hear you!"

—"Here he comes now! I'm getting out of here!"

Here's some movies I would add to the list: Buffalo 66, The Thin Blue Line, Donnie Darko and, of course, Blair Witch Project (the most successful independent movie of all time and one that leaves me with chills to this day!).

Raymond Burr - 2008-11-24 18:37:42

how about Billy Jack?

Nice Guy Eddie - 2008-11-26 05:31:58

I would choose Reservoir Dogs over Pulp Fiction . . . "How would you feel if every time you had to take a piss you had to do a fuckin' handstand?"

D-Bag - 2008-11-26 10:36:21

Sling Blade, Billy Bob Thornton's best performance . . . ever!

^^^ I'm pretty sure this is about INDEPENDENT films. Um.. Boondock Saints anyone? Not sure if it was independent or not but I def. love The Big Lebowski?

This list reminds me of the weakness of most American independent films-- these choices are terrible. Do youself a favor and read a good novel instead.

bendy - 2009-04-29 18:57:44

uhh... star wars... it only changed out culture in kind of a big way.

bNsN - 2009-05-02 11:19:50

American Beauty isn't on the list??? wow... it should be first

SoozeOr - 2009-07-21 12:20:56
