Pre-Redneck Larry The Cable Guy

"Pre-Redneck Larry The Cable Guy" Video

Before he hit the big time as America's best-loved redneck, Dan Whitney was just another unfunny comedian light years from today's blue collar comedy dynamo. Must have woke up one morning and figured he needed some sort of angle. From mullet-headed yuppie to beer-swilling yahoo. Bet most of his audience believes he's just another good ole boy who drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon and sits around watching reruns of Dukes of Hazzard. Larry the Cable Guy. They even have him starring in crappy films now. What a crock of shit . . .

Perhaps he was just trying to make it the bigtime as this standup comic personna PRIOR to being himself as Larry the Cable Guy. What does it matter that he had a different name and tried to make it as a standup back then. For the record, he wasn't that unfunny then. Everyone knows that Larry the Cable Guy is an act anyway.

If he was looking for an 'angle,' he certainly found it. But I really don't think this clip is 'unfunny.' It may not be the launching of a star, but I thought it was funny. Back to the 'angle' thing. What major comedian doesn't have a 'gimmick?' Jeff Foxworthy was an IBM engineer before going into comedy. Yes, he's from the south, but how many 'rednecks'in mobile homes was he rubbing elbows with as a white-collar engineer? He was smart enough to see the niche and went for it! Robin Williams isn't ALWAYS as manic and wired as he seems in his stand-up shows. He was perfectly not insane in movies such as "Good Will Hunting," "Dead Poets Society" and "The Fisher King." I can't imagine that Emo Phillips (although not as famous as the others mentioned) is anything like the space cadet he portrays himself as, or speaks with that bizarre cadence. Comedians have "an ACT!!!" and the ones that catch on and become more popular are the ones that find THEIR niche. Others may make a living, but never make the jump to more than just a few nights at the Improv and other chains that will book them. Some ARE genuine, however. I believe that George Carlin onstage is the same as George Carlin in real life. His opinions, anyway. It's not an act. And the stage, and now books, are his way of venting. In a very funny way! "Didja ever notice....?" I love observational comedy. Anyway, I'd let Dan Whitney/Larry The Cable Guy slide on this a little. When you find an 'angle' that allows you to make more money in your chosen profession, why not go for it? It doesn't necessarily make you a whore. Just my 2 cents. Dave

I was recently thinking about doing the same thing as this guy, but instead of comedy I would forte into the country music scene. You see, I would pretend to love America, beer, big trucks and church but show my disdain towards minorities and liberals through song writing. The poor gullible southern white trash will eat it up and yes, I will be a sell-out and lose any connection that I have with morality and character... But I will be filthy rich!
